2. Write an outline for your own speech: chose the theme that is of interest for you and your friends; employ all four modes of persuasion (ethos, pathos, logos and kairos).

5 steps to write your speech

Step 1: Select Topic


  • Select a topic you care about

  • Select a topic you know a lot about (or can learn about)

  • Choose a topic that is interesting to the audience

  • Narrow the topic




Step 2: Decide your general purpose


Step 3: formulate the central idea

The central idea is the basic message of your speech expressed in one sentence.

It is the message your listeners go away with. 

Every speech should have only one central idea.

  • Personal experience and investigations

  • Library resources

  • Computer database

  • Interviews


  • Establish a research strategy

  • Evaluate all sources

  • Take notes

  • Make note cards

 Divide into groups of 3-4 students and create a final version of a motivational speech for applicants to our university

1. Watch the following speeches. Complete the table. For each speech name: 

    • branch of rhetoric, 

    • type of speech, 

    • subtype of speech, 

    • its purpose, 

    • its central idea, 

    • rhetorical appeals, 

    • kinds of support materials and visual aids the speakers used.
