OVERVIEW

 
 

The course offers intorductory guidelines on the theory and practice of rhetoric and public speaking. Throughout the course, students learn to analyze and assess speaches both in audio- and video formats. The analyzed speeches range from the classical samples of political public speaking (e.g. Martin Luther King I Have a Dream) to modern TED speeches (e.g. Jamie Oliver Teach Every Child About Food).

Five canons of classical rhetoric, namely invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery, are regarded as milestones of a step-by-step speech creation algorithm. Students learn about their individual rhetoric style and are encouraged to word and deliver speeches of different types (informative, evocative, entertaining, argumentative and/or persuasive). 

The course consists of workshops and individual tasks that help students get expertise in interpreting the potential of various digital tools (see the table below):
